The Planets

Guest artist - Jessica Lee, violin

The iconic musical depiction of our solar system by the 20th century composer Gustav Holst, which has served as inspiration for generations of composers, both in the concert hall and the cinema.  Plus a gloriously Romantic concerto by the great Viennese late Romantic composer turned Hollywood legend    – Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

Kabalevsky    Colas Breugnon Ove.
Korngold       Violin Concerto
Holst            The Planets

  • Gustav Holst based his most-recognized composition on his own fascination with astrological and supernatural symbols. Incorporating Roman mythology and symbolism into our solar system, Holst relates mankind to the infinite world beyond.
  • Premiering in 1920, The Planets was composed before Pluto was discovered in 1930. Other composers penned a Pluto movement throughout the decades, but after its planetary status was removed in 2006, Holst’s original work became, once again, the complete work for our solar system.
