The Long Bay Symphony Guild awards three $500 scholarships every summer to Youth Orchestra members through the Toby Evans Scholarship Fund. Students are asked to submit an application and a letter explaining their need and the benefit of the music camp they are attending. This year, the Guild is pleased to present these scholarships to three very deserving students. Ayana Smith, french horn, a student of Waccamaw High School from Georgetown is attending Sewanee Summer Music Festival, at The University of the South, in Sewanee, Tennessee. This is 5 week - internationally acclaimed training program for advanced music students, as well as a distinguished professional concert series. Established in 1957, Sewanee not only prepares students for the challenges of a professional career, it also nourishes a lifetime love of music for student and audience alike. William Laney, cello, from Little River was chosen to attend the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Vermont. This is a four week intensive session with famous musicians, concerts every night and chamber music coaching by artists from all around the country who come to the festival to teach. The final recipient is Justin Matthews, percussion, from St. James High School. Justin auditioned and was accepted to receive a spot in the 2010 American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. He will be spending a week in New York at Carnegie Hall which will include morning and afternoon rehearsals, attending a Broadway play, a spot on CBS The Early Show, and a special seminar at Julliard School of Music. Justin and Axl Pons, also a Youth Orchestra member, were chosen from St. James High School out of 6000 student musicians from all over the country to participate in this program! « View all news |
