Youth Orchestra Schedule

Rehearsals are every Tuesday, 4:40 p.m.-6:40 p.m. at Myrtle Beach High School (3302 Grissom Parkway)

Youth Orchestra Auditions

Students entering the 7th grade through college during the 2011-2012 academic year are encouraged to audition. (Some exceptions regarding these age boundaries may be granted at the discretion of the conductor.) Positions are available for all standard orchestra instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, orchestral strings.

Dates & Times for Auditions:
Tuesday, September 6th from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Thursday, September 8th from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Specific audition times will be posted under the News section of the Long Bay Symphony’s homepage, www.longbaysymphony.com, on Saturday, September 3rd after all applications have been received. Please be sure to check this sight for your audition time.

Candidates will be required to perform the following in the audition:

Excerpt(s): (STRINGS ONLY)

If you are a string player, you must play the enclosed excerpts from the scheduled music for the Fall LBSYO concert. Do your best to come as close as possible to the indicated tempi and be careful to observe any written dynamics, articulations, etc. Please be aware that the excerpts are primarily for placement within each string section.

Major Scales - up to 3 flats/sharps (E-flat/A):

You will be asked to play 2 to 3 different scales. Be prepared to play them in the manner that you are accustomed. (minimum speed: quarter note = 60 beats/min.)

Solo/Etude:

Be prepared to perform one brief solo piece/etude that illustrates your technical skill and musical abilities. (FOR PERCUSSION: prepare 2 brief solos/etudes. One on snare drum and another one on mallets.)

Sight Reading:

You will be asked to sight read a short musical selection. It would helpful to work on this skill prior to your audition by reading simple duets and such with your friends.

Candidates will be notified of their acceptance status by Friday, September 9th; a complete roster will be posted under the News section of the Long Bay Symphony’s homepage, www.longbaysymphony.com. For those accepted, our Fall Retreat will be held on Saturday, September 17th from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Myrtle Beach High School. Our first scheduled rehearsal will be Tuesday, September 13th from 4:40 p.m. to 6:40 p.m. at the Myrtle Beach High School Commons Area. Attendance for the Fall Retreat and all rehearsals is MANDATORY, so mark your calendars now!
