Myrtle Beach, SC — The Long Bay Symphony (LBS) announces the retirement of its Music Director, Dr. Charles Jones Evans, at the conclusion of the 2024–2025 season. His retirement marks the end of a 29-year tenure that transformed the organization and elevated its standing in the cultural life of the Grand Strand and beyond.
Since joining LBS in 1998, Dr. Evans has led the symphony with visionary artistry, unwavering dedication, and a passion for musical excellence. Under his leadership, the orchestra has experienced remarkable artistic growth, expanded its repertoire, cultivated local talent, and brought world-class performances to the Myrtle Beach community.
“Charles’s vision and commitment helped guide LBS through pivotal moments of growth and evolution,” said Vinny Oliva, Board President of the Long Bay Symphony. “His artistic integrity and devotion to this community are unparalleled. We are truly grateful for the mark he leaves on our stage and in our hearts.”
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Evans championed both beloved Masterworks and innovative programming, introduced educational initiatives that inspired young musicians, and fostered collaborations that enriched the broader arts ecosystem. Highlights include the growth of the Long Bay Youth Symphony, the expansion of Pops and Chamber Series, and memorable performances that featured acclaimed guest artists and diverse musical genres.
"Thank you for your support of the Long Bay Symphony during my tenure as Music Director,” Dr. Evans said. “Building this orchestra has been a true labor of love for me--indeed, my life's work. May the LBS continue to thrive as a cultural beacon for this region for many years to come!"
The Long Bay Symphony will launch a national search for its next Music Director in the coming season. The 2025-2026 season will feature guest conductors from across the nation, to be announced in conjunction with the season announcement later this summer.
