Featuring Jessica Lee, violin

America’s cultural diversity has long intrigued—and influenced—the musical mainstream. While in the U.S., Czech composer Antonín Dvořák wrote his Symphony No. 9 (“New World”) as an example to urge American composers to draw from their own native music. Samuel Barber created his own distinct neo-romantic sound in works such as his Violin Concerto. And, today’s American spirit is wonderfully portrayed in young New York composer Jessie Montgomery’s Coincident Dances, which captures the vibrant energy of New York City.

Featuring Philip Powell, piano

100 years ago, in 1924, Rhapsody in Blue by Broadway composer George Gershwin was premiered, changing the course of American music and establishing the idea of “Symphonic Jazz.” Gershwin’s brief but meteoric career produced additional masterpieces like the full-length Concerto in F for piano, the symphonic poem American in Paris and Cuban Overture. Join the LBS and Philip Powell for a musical celebration of this American musical icon!

Prices range from $33-$75 depending on seating section (fees included).
